Fleck happy with flyhalf stocks

The flyhalf position has been an issue for the Stormers and Western Province over the years, with no one really stamping their authority in the position.

That trend might continue as Fleck will be trying to find out who his main playmaking general amongst the contenders will be, but he is not doubting their capabilities on the field.

"I am not going to say who the front runner is, but I will say the flyhalves we have in our system will do the job for us," said Fleck during a press conference at the WP High Performance Centre in Bellville.

"Robert du Preez had a good Currie Cup last year and an outstanding semifinal against the Bulls. He had a tough game, like everyone, against the Lions in that Final, but he is still a young kid who stepped up and delivered.

"I coached Jean-Luc du Plessis with the Under-21s. He is a seriously talented player, a player that is going to be pushing through the ranks.

"We got Kurt [Coleman], who had a tough season last year, but we all know that Kurt has certain qualities that can ignite a certain game that we want to play. All three flyhalves are pushing for that position.

Another area that will be a talking point for many will be the two lock positions. All eyes will be on Pieter-Steph du Toit's potential combination with fellow Springbok Eben Etzebeth in the second row.

Du Toit was one of the marquee signings for the Stormers ahead of this year's Super Rugby tournament.

"He [Pieter-Steph du Toit] is a quiet man and hard as nails," said Fleck. "He has been a great addition to the squad and is a quiet leader in his own sort of way. We have been very impressed with him.

"I am very happy with the lock situation with Eben coming back and Pieter-Steph Fleck happy with flyhalf stockswho wants to push for that No.5 position and wants to control things in terms of the line-outs.

"We also got a young kid in JD Schickerling who is a seriously talented rugby player. He will be giving a good shout at some stage in this competition.

"The guy who has probably doing the most work without being seen is Jean Kleyn. We need a bit of hard grafters in the side and we are starting to unearth those in terms of Pieter-Steph and JK [Jean Kleyn]."

The Stormers will play warm-up games against the South Western Districts Eagles on the weekend of January 30 and Argentina's Jaguares on February 13.
