Grant hoping to storm back

After spending most of the year on the sidelines, Stormers flyhalf Peter Grant is hungry to compete for a starting berth next season.

Grant was struck down by an ankle injury in the game against the Chiefs at Newlands in March, and did not play any further part in their campaign, with the on-loan Elton Jantjies claiming the No.10 jersey as the Stormers fell short of reaching the play-offs.

Grant will return to Japan during the Currie Cup where he will link up once more with the Kobe Steelers, but he hopes to return stronger than ever at the start of next year to reclaim his spot as first-choice playmaker for the Stormers.

The 28-year-old expects to sign a contract extension with the Cape franchise soon and he told Die Burger that he is hungrier than ever to make an impact when he returns from Japan.

"It wasn't nice to sit on the sidelines this year and I am keen to make up for it next year. Western Province have always treated me well and I did the same. I think I was a good investment for them over the years," he said.

Jantjies' contract with the Lions expires after the Currie Cup, and it is not clear where he will play his rugby next year, but if he does not return to Cape Town Grant is likely to face competition from Gary van Aswegen who is fit and set to play for Western Province in the Currie Cup.

Grant said that competition for places amongst the squad is healthy for any team and added that he looks forward to seeing how Van Aswegen matures through the rest of the season.

"It's important to have depth at flyhalf. Gary is starting to mature nicely. By the time I return (from Japan) he will hopefully have gained more experience and be highly rated as a flyhalf," he said.
