According to the New Zealand Herald, Smith could be out of action for up to six weeks.
The 30-year-old suffered an ankle injury during the Highlanders’ loss to the Blues in last weekend’s Super Rugby Round Six clash against the Blues.
The loss of Smith will be a big blow for the Highlanders who have slipped to ninth in the overall standings after failing to win a match since Round Two.
The Highlanders have a bye in Round Seven and then life will get difficult for them as four of their next five games are against Kiwi opposition.
