Lambie faces spell on the sidelines

Flyhalf and captain Patrick Lambie could face an extended period on the sidelines, after he suffered an AC (shoulder joint) injury just before half-time.

A full prognosis is still to be made on his expected return to play.

Lambie has suffered a number of serious injury setbacks in recent years – a torn bicep in 2014 that sidelined him for a long period and a neck injury kept him out of a significant part of last year's competition.

Director of Rugby Gary Gold confirmed that there are few other injuries in the wake of the physical encounter against Toulon.

"Patrick Lambie, Lubabalo Mtyanda, Francois Kleinhans and Ruan Botha are big losses for us," Gold said, without elaborating on the nature of the other injuries.

"They will all be assessed and we'll know more once they've undergone scans."Lambie faces spell on the sidelines

However, the flipside is the impressive performance of a couple of rookie loose forwards – the Du Preez twins, Jean-Luc and Daniel.

The Du Preez brothers were hugely influential in the Sharks' opening pre-season outing.

With the likes of Marcell Coetzee and Jacques Potgieter also in the squad, there is no shortage of talent available for the Super Rugby competition starting in three weeks' time.

"For a first hit-out, I was really pleased with certain aspects of the game," Gold said.

"I was particularly happy with our composure and the ability to score as many tries as we did.

"There are a couple of areas we still need to work on, but I think by and large we came through the exercise to measure our levels of fitness and physicality quite well, against a seasoned team, already halfway through their season.

"There are areas to improve but I am happy with the intensity and attitude from the players, particularly shown in the last 10-15 minutes  when we were under pressure."

The Sharks face another French giant in Toulouse on Thursday this week, the second and last match of the pre-season tour.

They open their Super Rugby campaign against the Southern Kings in Port Elizabeth on February 27.
