Lions sweat over front row duo

Marx suffered a neck injury in the second half, while Redelinghuys had to go off in the first few minutes of the match after injuring his wrist in the brutal 29-22 win over the men from Cape Town on Saturday.

"That's probably the negative about the game," said Ackermann after the game.

"We are concerned about Malcom and Julian – the other guys will hopefully just have bumps and bruises.

"To lose Julian in the third minute was a big setback for us. Malcom as well as he is in tremendous form.

"That is a nervous time for us – waiting to see what the results may be. Both of them were in discomfort.

After back-to-back derbies against the Sharks and Stormers, Ackermann said Marx and Redelinghuys were due for a rest against the Southern Kings next week.

"The plan was to rotate quite a number of guys next week and maybe it's a week too late for Julian and Malcom.

With Robbie Coetzee also out injured the Lions could have a crisis at hooker, however, Ackermann has faith in his wider squad.

"We would have to find another hooker if Malcom is out because Robbie Coetzee is also still out for quite a while and that is where we have to trust our squad," he said.

Meanwhile, Lions captain Warren Whiteley was happy with his team's defensive effort throughout the 80 minutes. The home side only let in one try deep into the second half and scored two tries themselves.

"It was a tough game and no side gave an inch," said Whiteley.

"It was tough upfront – the scrums I thought was a battle. There was a lot of pressure at line-out time. I thought the crowd did not make it any easier as there was a lot of noise out there, which was fantastic.

"It is satisfactory. It was not easy and I am really proud of the effort out there. The Stormers did not make it easy for us. Their defence is tremendous and we really had to fight for those tries.

"I am really proud with the way we held them out at the end. The defensive effort was massive tonight and there were times when it could have gone either way."
