Matfield goes under the knife

It has been confirmed that veteran Springbok lock Victor Matfield will have surgery on his knee, ruling him out for three to four weeks.

Reports surfaced early last week of Matfield's knee injury, but the Bulls played down the problem and suggested that the lock was being rested for the match against the Lions.

However, after consultation with renowned knee specialist Doctor Daan Du Plessis on Tuesday, it was confirmed they would need to operate.

According to Bulls doctor Org Strauss, Matfield is going into surgery Wednesday for an arthroscopy on the knee to fix up damaged cartilage.

"The idea is to get it done now to avoid problems going forward – especially with the World Cup getting closer as well," Strauss said.

Matfield's injury blow has been softened by the news that fellow Springbok Flip van der Merwe has returned to training with the Bulls, after an injury of his own.
