IN THE SPOTLIGHT: The SANZAAR joint venture partners met in Singapore for a ‘very productive’ meeting on the future of the Super Rugby competition.

The current Super Rugby season consists of 15 teams after the SANZAAR axed three teams in 2017.

Last year SANZAAR gave the Cheetahs, Southern Kings and the Western Force the boot after the 18-team competition proved to be largely unpopular.

However, reports suggested that the competitions could undergo another revamp in 2020 with SANZAAR looking to introduce a Pacific Island team.

There are also speculations of SANZAAR’s plans to take some of the matches to the USA, Canada and parts of Asia in an attempt to break into alternative markets.

With loads of uncertainties surrounding the future of the competition, SANZAAR, whose broadcast deal for Super Rugby expires at the end of 2020, did not reveal any details of the meeting.

“The SANZAAR joint venture partners met in Singapore this week for a very productive meeting on the future of its competitions,” the statement read, adding: “The discussions are challenging due to the complexities of the four individual markets across multiple time zones and the jurisdictions in which we operate, however, we are making strong progress,”
