Reds-bound Moore to lead Brumbies
Brumbies coach Stephen Larkham said that newly appointed co-captains Christian Lealiifano and Moore will complement each other in their leadership roles in 2016.
Lealiifano and Moore were announced as co-captains on Friday, the first time in Brumbies history that the organisation has been captained by more than one player.
Moore caused a stir late last year when he announced that he will move to the Reds after the 2016 season, after playing more than 100 times for the Brumbies.
Larkham said the choices made sense.
"It [having co-captains] will lessen the load on each of the individuals," Larkham said.
"They'll complement each other really well in the side, they've both got similar attributes and I think together they're going to make a great team."
Larkham said the choices were based solely on this year.
"We really have focused on this year," Larkham said.
"There's obviously a bit of public expectation on the team. The boys have been together for a while now and we're really focused on having a good year this year, we're not looking any further forward at this stage."
Moore captained the Brumbies to the Super Rugby semifinals in 2015, before going on to captain the Wallabies at the 2015 World Cup.
He told reporters he is pleased to retain the captaincy.
"I really enjoyed having that responsibility last year and I'm really pleased that Bernie [Stephen Larkham] has given me another crack at it."
Moore said he was happy to have Lealiifano join him as co-captain.
"I'm very pleased to have Christian working alongside me," Moore said.
"I want to learn as much as I can from him and continue to grow as a leader, I think this structure will really help that to happen."
Moore said Lealiifano's experience would be a huge asset to the pair as co-captains.
"He's been here the longest of any of the players and he thoroughly deserves the opportunity," Moore said.
"I'll certainly be helping him in any way I can with what I've learnt about leadership and likewise I'll certainly be picking things up from him that help the team.
"Ever since I've been at this franchise I would've certainly gone to him about things around the team and this just makes that more official.
"There'll be a lot of people who say this can't work and it's up to us to make sure that it does."
Lealiifano said he was ecstatic to take up the role of co-captain in 2016.
"First and foremost it's an absolute honour," Lealiifano said.
"I'm very humbled to be given this opportunity and I'm grateful that Bernie, his staff and the playing group have given us the backing to lead them."
After arriving at the Brumbies as a fresh faced 18-year old from Melbourne, Lealiifano said it was very special to be captaining the Brumbies.
"I guess you could say it's been a 10-year apprenticeship for me," Lealiifano said.
"Looking down the track to be able to co-lead with Stephen Moore is a massive moment for myself and my family. Whatever I can learn and take forward to improve me as a player and a leader I'll take on board."
