Smith shows faith in Varsity Cup stars
Smith named lock Renier Hugo as his captain for the match. Hugo represent the University of Pretoria for two seasons before making his way into the Cheetahs Currie Cup team last year.
Two other Varsity Cup graduates, flyhalf Niel Marais and lock Armandt Koster, were also included in the starting XV for the Bulls match. Marais and Koster were part of Smiths' Shimlas team that won the Varsity Cup last.
Marais eventually went on to make his Super Rugby debut in last year's campaign after Smith took over the reigns from Naka Drotske. Koster made his first foray into the Cheetahs team during last year's Currie Cup.
Meanwhile, the Free State team will be launching their new Super Rugby jerseys on Friday. The new designs see a return to a traditional all-white home strip and an all-orange away strip.
