Stormers 'holding thumbs' for Jones
The Scotland star walked off with a hamstring injury after 26 minutes in the match against Italy last Saturday.
The Stormers have already lost two international centres to long-term injuries this year and Jones' injury could just compound matters ahead of a busy schedule for the Cape side.
Damian de Allende is currently out of action with an ankle injury he sustained in the 37-24 win over the Bulls in Round One. Juan de Jongh has been out of action since early February with a torn medial collateral ligament.
"For him [Jones] to come off in an international game, it can't be good," Stormers assistant coach Russell Winter told reporters via teleconference from Singapore ahead of their match against the Sunwolves.
"We know it is hamstring and they [Scotland] are doing the tests. Obviously, they don't want to give us the worst-case scenario or bad news if they are not sure themselves. They have done all the tests and our doctors have not seen him yet. As soon as we get back we will see where he is at."
Winter added: "I don't think he [Jones] will be back when we get back, so we are a little bit uncertain about the length of the injury at the moment.
"We are a little bit concerned because we have other injuries at centre, so we are holding thumbs that it is not going to be too bad."
Meanwhile, the Stormers have rested a few of their other internationals for the Sunwolves clash.
Locks Eben Etzebeth and Pieter-Steph du Toit and prop Frans Malherbe were not considered for selection due to the Springbok management plan.
"It is a chance for those guys who have been training so hard in the pre-season – Jan [de Klerk], JD [Schickerling] and obviously Chris [van Zyl]," said Winter.
"They really deserve a chance because they have been training so phenomenally well in the pre-season and they had good warm-up games as well.
"We understand the whole Springbok agreement that we have and the players do play a lot of rugby, so for us to give those players a chance is a good thing for us.
"We had to spend a little more time with the new faces that are going to play this weekend. I think our preparation has been good and I think all those guys are up for the challenge. It's going to be good to see what sort of depth we have in our squad, which is going to be very important for us going forward."
