Stormers were never worried

The Stormers were pushed hard by the Kings, but never felt under threat in the pouring rain at Newlands on Saturday.

The home side had an edge at the set-pieces, and managed to exert territorial dominance over the Kings who showed typical character to hang on in the conditions and make a game of it.

While both teams managed one driving maul try each, the Stormerswere able to put the visitors under pressure and felt that they had earned the upper hand.

Stormers coach Allister Coetzee said: "It was one of those banana peel games that could have gone either way but credit to the players for pulling it off.

"The pack played well and that was always going to be important to lay a good foundation to get our kicking game going to be able to play in the right areas.

"We did put the pressure on them in the right areas therefore we got the penalties.

"I think we exited well, we made the least mistakes in our own half and got out of our half very well,"added the Stormers coach.

Stormers captain Jean de Villiers said that despite the Kings' try his side never felt that the game was out of their control.

"The belief was there and I never felt as if we were going to lose the game to be honest. I thought we were in control pretty much the whole game.

"We probably could have gone a little further ahead in the first half.

"I thought there were a lot of positives. I thought we showed attacking intent and we actually managed to put the phases together," he said.

The Stormers remain an outside shot to qualify for the play-offs, but they will really need the stars to align for them in order for that to happen so Coetzee is keeping his outlook simple.

"We have got a job to do at home here, we have got to win our games and if we keep our end of the deal who knows anything can happen.

"We have accepted the situation we are in and we just need to make sure that when we regroup after the break we have got the Cheetahs at home and we keep performing," he said.

Coetzee hopes to have forwards Michael Rhodes, Pat Cilliers and possibly Rynhardt Elstadt available after the June Test break as they look to make a late-season charge.
