Teichmann-like captaincy from Pat

Sharks flyhalf Pat Lambie's style of captaincy has an air of Springbok great Gary Teichmann's leadership approach, according to coach Gary Gold.

Lambie, who has been a part of the Sharks leadership quartette from the start of the season, was handed the captaincy for the upcoming match against the Crusaders this weekend, in Durban.

The Springbok flyhalf missed out on the match against the Western Force last week, as part of a SARU player management initiative, with the captaincy falling to flank Jean Deysel.

Had Lambie not been rested, he would have lead the team out onto Kings Park last weekend explained Gold.

"The situation was a simple one," Gold said.

"Pat was always going to be captain [after the suspension of regular captain, Bismarck du Plessis] – but he had to be rested.

"So there was no particular reason as to why he should loose the captaincy this week."

Gold was happy with the manner in which Deysel lead the team against the Force, stating that the flank – and Lambie – had a style of leadership that drew comparisons with former Sharks and Springbok No.8 Gary Teichmann.

Teichmann-like captaincy from Pat"Pat is very similar to Jean [Deysel] in many ways," Gold continued.

"But the person I really like to compare them both to is Gary Teichmann – they are those type of captains.

"They are cool, calm and collected, they lead by the example they set on the field.

"Pat is a highly respected individual, he speaks a lot of sense, but he does not speak a lot, so when he does people listen to him.

"That is the type of captain I enjoy.

"I am not so sure that a chest-beating, wild man from Borneo, type of captain has a sustainability the whole time.

"You see consistently that the best captains in the world are those guys who have that air of confidence about them, and that when they speak, they speak sense.

"They speak sense in high-pressure situations, and that is the critical thing for me.

"That is why I like people like Deysel, Bismarck [Du Plessis] and Pat as our leaders."

Many pundits feel that Lambie is the right man to lead the Sharks, especially after two players from their leadership group were banned for foul play and a dangerous tackle.

Lambie and Teichmann both epitomise hard working, yet humble players and captains.

"They are both quiet leaders, leading by example rather than by shouting and screaming.

Teichmann's captaincy suited the team's he lead, bringing them much success, and perhaps this is exactly what the Sharks have been looking for.
