Toomua out of England series?

Media reports on Friday suggested that Toomua is to undergo surgery and will miss next month's three-Test series against England.

At the same time Brumbies coach Stephen Larkham confirmed that the player has been struggling with the knee for weeks, but stopped short of ruling him out of Wallaby selection.

Toomua came off in the 73rd minute of their loss to the Highlanders last week, but had been managing the injury over a number of weeks.

“He’s been struggling for the last couple of weeks,” said Larkham.

“It’s been hard for him to get up for training runs and like we saw on the weekend it was hard for him to get through the game on the weekend so we had to make that decision."

Larkham said there was no time frame on Toomua's return and assured that he'd be assessed weekly to monitor his progress.

“We’ll play it week by week with Matty, see how he pulls up at the end of this week and make a further assessment after that,” he said.

However, Fox Sports reported that Toomua had undergone surgery on his knee and that he will be sidelined for the next six weeks.

If Toomua's recovery requires a lay-off period of six weeks, the midfielder can be expected to miss their meeting with the Rebels and the Sunwolves and will be unavailable for at least the first Test against England on June 11 in Brisbane.

Toomua’s absence opens the door for the versatile Robbie Coleman who moves from wing to centre, something that Larkham said he was pleased about.

“Robbie Coleman gets an opportunity and he’s been pushing to play 12 pretty much since he’s been here at the Brumbies,” Larkham said.

“He’s really looking forward to this opportunity and James Dargaville gets his start on the wing and he's also had a really good performance when he’s had his opportunity.”

Toomua’s injury adds to the Brumbies’ casualties as the 26-year-old joins wings Joe Tomane and Henry Speight on the injury list.
