Two great Scotts for the Rebels
The Rebels have named co-captains for the first time in their history as they unveild Scott Fuglistaller and Scott Higginbotham as leaders for the Super Rugby season.
Higginbotham led the Club in 2014, while Fuglistaller was named as captain for the Rebels’ final game of the season against the Bulls when Higginbotham was unavailable.
McGahan believes that the two captains complement one another well, and will lead by example.
“It is very exciting to announce both Scott Fuglistaller and Scott Higginbotham as Captains,” McGahan said.
“Both players command respect within the playing group, and set a strong and consistent example to the playing squad.
"They have been recognised by their peers, the Rebels’ management team and the executive, who all had significant input into this decision.
“Scott Fuglistaller has had an enormous impact since moving to Melbourne two years ago.
"He really drives the professionalism and standards of the group, and is a wonderful conduit between players and staff, as well as a passionate and very talented loose forward.
“Scott Higginbotham brings extensive experience gained through a challenging first full season in the role.
"He is a wonderful ambassador for rugby in Victoria, and leads through his actions on the field; he will enjoy having some support in the role, and everybody at the club will benefit from these appointments.”
For Fuglistaller, the appointment comes as a huge honour as he continues to turn heads in Melbourne.
“I’m beyond ecstatic; it’s a goal I have always had at the back of my mind to captain a team, and to do it in Super Rugby is as good as it gets,” he said.
“Higgers [Higginbotham] and I work really well together, and with me stepping up into an official capacity it takes some pressure off him and helps provide a really good balance across the squad.
"He is a wonderful leader and people follow him; I’m really looking forward to working with him.”
Higginbotham said he was looking forward to again leading the club in 2015, and praised the additional support he will receive from Fuglistaller.
“It’s exciting to continue to lead the club,” Higginbotham said.
“I’ve always been grateful to be in this role since first being appointed over 18 months ago, and I’m looking forward to continuing with that and working with Scott Fuglistaller.
“Scott [Fuglistaller] has been a great leader ever since he arrived, and sets the right example to the group on and off the field.
"He is really supportive of the playing group, and having him there will make my role a lot easier.”
Both Fuglistaller and Higginbotham are members of the five-man Leadership group
