VIDEO: Humble Marx brushes off 'world's best' tag

Malcolm Marx ahead of semifinal

SUPER RUGBY SPOTLIGHT: Being labelled the “best hooker in the world” is not something Malcolm Marx pays attention to.

The Lions star was in outstanding form once again in his team’s 40-23 Super Rugby quarterfinal win against the Jaguares.

Marx has been a talisman for the Lions in Super Rugby with his robust style of play on attack and defence and he became a master at stealing opposition ball at the breakdown.

There are many who consider him to be the best in his position on the planet at the moment, but Marx is a player who wants to share the spotlight with his teammates.

“I’m obviously very humbled, but it’s not about me, it’s about the team at the end of the day,” Marx told reporters in Johannesburg.

“Anything I can do to benefit the team and put the team in a better position to win the game, that’s what I will do.”

Marx missed a few Super Rugby matches in May and the June Test series against England because of injury and he admits it was a frustrating period for him. However, he regained his form quickly and his eagerness to help the Lions on the field has been there for all to see in recent matches.

“I just wanted to play. I just sat on the sidelines during the international series and when the boys played the Stormers down in Cape Town and I just said to myself when I get back all I want to do is get back into form and contribute wherever I can for the team.

“It is not nice sitting on the sideline and watching, but I had to do what I had to do and unfortunately injuries are part of the game, so I am just happy to be back on the park,” he added.

The Lions face the Waratahs in their semifinal in Johannesburg on Saturday and Marx will be called on again to disrupt the opposition’s ball.

“They are very dangerous off quick ball, but it is not only me that can slow the ball down. There are 14 other okes on the field as well and it is going to take a massive team effort and that is what we are preparing for this week,” Marx said.
