Where have these Blues been all season?

Their first bonus-point win of the season came with tries of the highest calibre, as they ran the Brumbies off their feet in an outstanding display in Auckland this past Friday.

The Blues bagged two stunners in the opening seven minutes to set the tone.

While the visitors, desperate for a win to remain in the play-off race, closed to within two tries at half-time, they were kept scoreless in the second half while the Blues added two more tries.

In-form All Black Jerome Kaino scored the first from a cross-field kick from Ihaia West after four minutes, while captain James Parsons bagged the second from a clever short-side move from a line-out, both converted by Piers Francis.Where have these Blues been all season?

Blues coach Tana Umaga admitted he wasn't quite sure why it took them so long, but is the way they have been trying to play all season.

"The free-flowing game suits us," Umaga told reporters in Auckland.

"It's our natural game.

"For one reason or another it has taken a while for us to find it."

Umaga added that they used the time in the June break to get their confidence up and have looked much better in the last two games.

"We still have things to learn and build on, but we are very happy with the outcome [against the Brumbies] and the way we did it.

"We've done a lot of work on our mental preparation and Kylie Wilson [the Blues' mental skills coach] has had a lot to do with that.

"We've been trying to build confidence in them as individuals and with each other – to push through with our game plan.

"That has come to the fore in the last few weeks and ultimately against the Brumbies.

"We can see the players starting to grow and take the learning on.

"We wish that it might have happened earlier, but I am very happy with the way they played."

The Brumbies never recovered after the Blues unleashed a four-try blitz in the first 20 minutes to maintain Eden Park's reputation as a graveyard for Australian teams.

The home side scored six tries to two, including doubles for veteran All Black Jerome Kaino and Rugby League convert Matt Duffie.

The Blues, already out of finals contention, played like a side with nothing to lose, throwing the ball around with abandon.

Kaino was a massive presence, but captain Jamie Parsons said the franchise's young talent was also emerging as the three-time champions rebuild following some lean years.

"We set a goal at the start of the season to restore a bit of pride in the Blues franchise," he said.

"We haven't done it completely yet but it's definitely a step closer."

The result means the Blues have won 13 of their last 15 matches against Australian Super Rugby sides at Eden Park.

They can play spoiler for the Australian conference again this week, when they host the Waratahs at the same venue.
