U20 Rugby Championship, Round One - Teams and Predictions
PREVIEW: Springbok captain Siya Kolisi delivered a motivational speech to the SA Under-20 side ahead of their Rugby Championship clash against Argentina’s Los Pumitas on Monday.
The southern hemisphere’s next generation of stars descend on Gqeberha for the second successive year, with the action kicking off with Round One of the three-round tournament on Freedom Day, April 27, followed by matchdays on May 3 and 9 as the teams step up their preparations for the Junior World Championship in Georgia in June and July.
The tournament opener will see New Zealand and Australia battle it out before the Junior Boks start their campaign against Argentina.
The defending champions are New Zealand, who edged out Australia last year by a single point in the standings after three rounds in a close and very competitive tournament.
The tournament is a pathway for emerging talent from Argentina, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa to gain experience at international level and hopefully springboard them into international representation at senior level.
Kolisi, who made his Springbok debut in 2013, said that it was a significant privilege to present the matchday jerseys to captain Riley Norton and his team.
“My journey with the national team started with the SA U18s and, at one time, I too sat in those chairs with the Junior Boks,” said Kolisi.
“Rugby is a fantastic platform to express yourself, so go out and enjoy the experience.
“I am from this area, so I will be there, along with many of my friends from Zwide.
“The Eastern Cape is a passionate rugby province, and we are all excited to host the tournament here for another year.
“We are looking forward to seeing you play, and we wish you the best of luck for tomorrow against Argentina.”
Norton thanked Kolisi for his support.
“It’s incredible that you played on Friday and were here by 10am on Sunday to present us with our jerseys.
“You and the Springboks are an inspiration to all of us, and we hope to make you proud with our effort on Monday afternoon.”
