Gloomy prospects after Goosen’s latest injury blow

INJURY UPDATE: Bulls flyhalf Johan Goosen’s calf strain injury appears to be more serious than initially anticipated.

The injury occurred on the second day of training ahead of the Bulls’ opening game of their United Rugby Championship tour against Ulster.

The 33-year-old has had rotten luck with injuries throughout his career (predominantly knee), and his return after this latest setback is unknown at this stage.

Bulls head coach Johan Ackermann confirmed that Goosen returned to South Africa but is hopeful that the playmaker will be ready for their match against the Lions on November 29.

“Johan [Goosen] went back to South Africa last week.

“He is back in rehab. They’re still not happy with his calf injury.

“We’ve got a few weeks off after Friday’s match, which will give him time to get back to full fitness ahead of the game against the Lions.

“Most of the other guys will hopefully be available for selection after the [international] break.”
