Bok utility and fellow hardman recommits to Bulls
CONTRACT EXTENSION: The Bulls secured the long-term services of two utility forwards, which includes a Springbok.
Loose forwards Marco van Staden and Mpilo Gumede recommitted their long-term futures with the Pretoria-based side.
The dual signings represent a significant move in the franchise’s multi-year recruitment and retention strategy.
Van Staden has committed to the club until June 2028, while Gumede has signed a five-year deal that keeps him at Loftus Versfeld until June 2029.
Van Staden can switch between flanker and hooker, whilst Gumede doubles up as a loose forward and lock.
Both players are central to the tactical evolution under coach Johan Ackermann.

Van Staden, a double-World Cup winner who recently notched his 100th cap for the Bulls, provides the veteran breakdown expertise and physicality that has defined the Pretoria pack since he first joined in 2017.
Gumede, meanwhile, represents the next generation of the Bulls’ ambition.
Since his arrival from the Sharks in July 2023, the 25-year-old has transitioned from a high-potential prospect into a team regular.
By securing him until 2029, the Bulls have locked down one of the most versatile loose forward talents in the country.
Bulls CEO Edgar Rathbone emphasised that these extensions are a cornerstone of the club’s professional roadmap.
“There has been some outside noise suggesting we are a selling club, but the reality inside Loftus is very different,” said Rathbone.
“Retaining a world-class veteran like Marco and a generational talent like Mpilo is a clear signal of our stability and our ambition.
“We aren’t just building for next week; we are securing the spine of this team for the next two to three years.
“These men believe in the vision Johan Ackermann is implementing, and we are proud that they see Loftus as the best place to achieve their Springbok and club ambitions.”
