Boks and promising youngsters headline Lions tour squad for Irish job

By Warren Fortune
Saturday 2 May 2026

SQUAD ANNOUNCEMENT: Lions head coach Ivan van Rooyen has revealed his tour squad for their tough United Rugby Championship tour.

The team from Johannesburg will face Leinster in Dublin in the penultimate round next weekend, before they finish the regular season in Limerick against Munster.

The Lions are currently in third position in the URC standings, level on points (53) with Leinster and just two points ahead of fifth-placed Munster (51).

Springboks Asenathi Ntlabakanye and Ruan Venter are some of the impressive names in the forward pack, which also includes the promising Batho Hlekani.

There are also Boks in the backline in the form of Morne van den Berg and Quan Horn.

Last year’s South African Under-20 star, Haashim Pead, has been included to provide scrumhalf cover.
