Bucket-list dream meets 150th cap for Johan Grobbelaar
SPOTLIGHT: Johan Grobbelaar will tick off one of the biggest items on his rugby bucket list this weekend when the Bulls hooker runs out at the iconic Murrayfield Stadium for the first time in his career.
The occasion will be made even more special as the semifinal against Glasgow Warriors is set to mark Grobbelaar’s 150th appearance for the Bulls, adding another milestone to a journey that has included United Rugby Championship finals and eight Test caps.
Now the 28-year-old has the opportunity to combine a personal landmark with the chance to help guide the Bulls back into another URC final and perhaps take one step closer to the title that has so far eluded them.
While the occasion is special on a personal level, Grobbelaar insists the focus remains firmly on helping the Bulls take another step towards a long-awaited URC title.
“It’s been a great few years here in Pretoria with the Bulls,” Grobbelaar reflected.
“There have been some ups and downs but playing in those URC finals and now having the opportunity again to go all the way is special. Hopefully, we can get another crack at it and this time finish the job.”

The move from Glasgow’s usual home ground, Scotstoun, to Murrayfield adds another layer of intrigue to the contest.
Having spent the past few seasons adapting to artificial surfaces in the URC, Grobbelaar admits he is relishing the chance to return to a traditional grass field at one of rugby’s most famous venues.
“It’s a field I’ve never played on before, so it’s going to be a great opportunity,” he said.
“It’s something that’s on everyone’s bucket list. I’m really looking forward to playing at Murrayfield and playing on grass again.”
The Bulls believe the surface change could subtly influence the contest, particularly in the set-piece battle.
“The pitch is obviously a bit different, and it’ll be on grass again,” Grobbelaar explained.
“We’re used to grass at Loftus, so hopefully that helps us, but our plans and structures won’t change much.”

Standing between the Bulls and another URC final is a Glasgow side that finished top of the standings and has earned a reputation as one of the competition’s most complete teams.
“Glasgow are probably one of the best-balanced teams in the competition,” Grobbelaar said.
“There aren’t many weak points that you can target. They’re a quality side and they’ve shown that throughout the season.”
The Bulls have shared some fierce battles with Franco Smith’s men over the last two seasons, including the 2024 URC final at Loftus Versfeld, where Glasgow stunned the home side to lift the trophy.
While that painful defeat remains in the memory bank, Grobbelaar says revenge is not driving the Bulls this week.
“You can’t forget about it, but we have to leave that in the past,” he said.
“We’ve learned from it and now we’ve got another great opportunity to play against them at an iconic stadium. Everyone is excited about the challenge.”
If the Bulls are to upset the defending champions on their home patch, Grobbelaar believes accuracy and clinical execution will be decisive.
“The margins are going to be very small,” he said.
“We’ve left opportunities out there in recent games and in knockout rugby you can’t afford to do that. We have to take every chance we get.”
The scrum battle will also be under the spotlight, an area where the Bulls have traditionally backed themselves against any side in the competition.
“It takes months and sometimes years to build a reputation at scrum time,” Grobbelaar said.
“We’ve had some good scrums against them before and hopefully we can build on that and make it a big weapon for us again.”
For Grobbelaar, a milestone appearance at one of rugby’s most iconic venues would be memorable enough. Helping the Bulls reach another URC final would make it unforgettable.
