Bulls determined to make Nortje's 150th one to remember

The Bulls have no shortage of motivation heading into Saturday’s United Rugby Championship quarterfinal against Munster, with the Pretoria outfit eager to make it a memorable occasion for the players who have helped shape the team – none more so than Ruan Nortje, who is set to make his 150th appearance for the franchise.

Nortje’s milestone comes at a significant moment in the Bulls’ season, and according to fellow leader Marcell Coetzee, the squad is determined to mark the occasion in fitting fashion.

A product of Pretoria rugby through and through, Nortje has become one of the cornerstones of the Bulls setup, evolving from a talented youngster into a Springbok and one of the most respected figures in the dressing room.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to be his roommate over the last couple of years,” said Coetzee. “I’m just proud of how he’s grown as a person. He’s taken his talent to another level, settled into the Springbok environment and the maturity and leadership he brings to the squad is incredible.”

With a number of players set to move on at the end of the season and others reaching significant milestones, Coetzee believes there is an added emotional edge within the group.

“There’s a lot of positive emotion going into this game,” he said. “The boys just want to pull together and make it special.”

The Bulls have effectively been playing knockout rugby for weeks after a season that regularly placed them under pressure in the URC standings. Rather than wilt under that pressure, Coetzee believes it has hardened the squad for the challenges ahead.

“We were under pressure throughout the season and it forced us into a playoff mindset every week. We’ve become comfortable with that pressure and found our mojo through those challenges. Now we want to take that into the playoffs.”

Standing in their way is a Munster side that arrives in Pretoria with plenty of motivation of its own.

“They’ve got challenges off the field and I know that will fuel them,” said Coetzee. “They’ll come to Loftus wanting to create hope and purpose for their side, so we have to match that desperation.”

The Bulls skipper expects Munster’s kicking game and breakdown work to provide some of the biggest threats.

“Their nine and ten control the game very well with their kicking. At the breakdown they make life difficult for teams that want to play with tempo, and they disrupted us in the second half the last time we played them. They’re still a quality side with a system that works for them.”

While acknowledging Munster’s strengths, Coetzee insists the Bulls’ focus remains firmly on imposing their own game at Loftus Versfeld.

“We respect what they’re going to bring, but we’ve got things we want to implement too. Playing at home, we’ve got a DNA that works for us and we want to stick to it.”

The veteran loose forward also highlighted the importance of the blend between experienced campaigners and the next generation of Bulls stars, pointing to milestone men such as Nortje and Stedman Gans as examples of players helping guide younger teammates through the pressure of playoff rugby.

“Playoffs are all about handling pressure. The more experienced players you have around you who’ve been through these moments, the more it helps. It allows you to share the load and remain calm when it matters most.”

For the Bulls, Saturday is about more than simply booking a place in the semifinals. It’s an opportunity to honour those who have carried the jersey with distinction and give Nortje the perfect celebration on his 150th appearance.
