Club rugby winger Davids stars for Stormers in defeat to Bulls
MATCH REPORT: The Bulls defeated the Stormers in a United Rugby Championship pre-season friendly by 38-26 at Faure Street Stadium in Paarl on Friday afternoon.
The Bulls outscored the Stormers by six tries to four, but will have some concerns regarding their scrum and line-outs which the hosts dominated.
Robertson Town RFC recruit Lleyton Davids had a blinder during his time on the park, which is something John Dobson will be pleased with ahead of a demanding URC and Champions Cup season.
The Stormers opened the scoring in the fourth minute through Dylan Miller off the back of a five-metre scrum.
The Bulls responded with a rolling maul try through Marcell Coetzee in the seventh minute after an error at the restart by Hacjivah Dayimani.
The Stormers struck back through Davids, who burned Thaakir Abrahams on the outside to dot down. Matthee slotted the conversion to make it 12-5 after 15 minutes of play.
The Bulls replied through Francois Klopper from close range in the 21st minute before a break in play for replacements.
The visitors took the lead for the first time in the 37th minute through Thaakir Abrahams following a crossfield kick by Willie le Roux.
The second half saw the Stormers strike first as Miller grabbed a brace in the 47th minute, with Matthee’s conversion putting the hosts back in the lead.
The Bulls struck back against the run of play through Viaan Mentoor in the 59th minute to retake the lead.
The Stormers came back with a penalty try after a dominant maul in the 68th minute, before the Bulls responded almost immediately with a try by JJ Theron under the posts in the 72nd minute.
The Bulls extended their lead and sealed the deal in the 74th minute with a try by Sebastian de Klerk, with Johannes adding the extras.
