Bok duo and Griquas hero headline Sharks’ touring squad

SQUAD ANNOUNCEMENT: Sharks head coach John Plumtree has unveiled his touring squad ahead of their trip to Galway.

They will face Connacht in Round Six of the United Rugby Championship on Saturday, before heading to France to take on Toulouse in the Champions Cup.

Springboks Edwill van der Merwe and Grant Williams have been included in the squad after they were released by the Springboks ahead of Saturday’s Test against Wales.

The Sharks have also brought in Griquas stalwart George Whitehead as flyhalf cover.

In September, the 36-year-old landed an injury-time penalty to secure a 27-25 win for the Kimberley-based team in the Currie Cup Final against the Lions at Ellis Park.

The story continues below…

Meanwhile, in the pack, Springbok lock Jason Jenkins will add some much-needed muscle in tricky Northern Hemisphere conditions.

The Sharks are struggling with one win from five outings in the URC so far.

Last month, it was revealed that Plumtree will step down as head coach at the conclusion of the season.
