Dobson drops big Mchunu verdict after Stormers' statement win
IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Described as a ‘different individual’, Stormers Director of Rugby John Dobson has nothing but praise for prop Ntuthuko Mchunu following the win over Glasgow Warriors.
The Stormers bounced back from their disastrous defeat to Connacht in fine style, beating Glasgow Warriors 48-12 in Round 16 of the United Rugby Championship.
The win saw the Cape Town franchise replace the Scottish side at the top of the table with just two games to go before the play-offs.
Currently, the Stormers have 56 log points and Glasgow are in second with 55.
A standout performer on the day was loosehead prop Mchunu, who crossed for two tries and played a key role in a dominant forward display that dismantled Glasgow at the set-piece.
Stormers Director of Rugby Dobson was full of praise for the 27-year-old.
“He’s a different individual,” Dobson said.
“His general play is good and I can’t see how he doesn’t suit us.
“He’s going to be pushing for much higher honours.”
Mchunu, who joined from the Sharks last year, has is gradually becoming a key figure in the Stormers’ forward pack, particularly within a thriving scrum culture.
Dobson also credited scrum guru and former Stormers prop Brok Harris for his behind-the-scenes influence.
“Since he’s come here, I think Brok Harris is another unsung hero, and our scrum culture is so fantastic.”
He added: “If you look at that front row, Vernon Matongo and Oliver Reid weren’t there on the loose head side, Frans Malherbe and Sazi Sandi weren’t there on the tight head side, but they still worked well and Mchunu’s general game, especially his ball carrying, is wonderful,” Dobson explained.
“I think he’s going to be a star for South African rugby for some time to come.”
Dobson said the 27-year-old talent makes him one of the most sought-after players.
“There are lots of people overseas who like him.
“So, we’ll have to see if we can see that threat off.”
