Heartbreak for Bulls as Leinster go back-to-back

URC final

MATCH REPORT: Leinster are back-to-back United Rugby Championship champions with an emphatic 36-7 victory over the Bulls at Croke Park on Friday evening.

The Bulls didn’t have a good start as Canan Moodie earned a yellow card in the first minute for an intentional knock down.

From there Leinster kicked for corner and launched their attack, running through phase after phase, pounding away at the Bulls five metre line.

It was great defence from 14 men and then Cameron Hanekom got over the ball and won a turn-over.

A poor pass on halfway from Handre Pollard was intercepted from O’Brien after the Bulls were getting over the advantage line.

O’Brien hacked it through before collecting the ball 30-metres out before sprinting unopposed under the crossbar.

Sam Prendergast couldn’t have an easier conversion and the hosts had opened their account.

The first scrum of the game was reset three times after some relentless phases from the home side but then the ball was knocked forward by Rónan Kelleher.

Leinster’s second try came from the ensuing play after a hole opened up and Rieko Ioane scored in the corner, taking their lead to 12-0 after the conversion was miss.

Leinster was on fire, playing with intent, power and pace.

It was end-to-end action. The Bulls turned over and spread the ball left through the hands.

Stravino Jacob kicked through but somehow Prendergast managed to cover up acres of space to slide to the ground and gather the ball.

After some relentless Leinster defense, they turned it into attack and won a scrum five meters out from the Bulls try-line after Willie le Roux carried the ball back.

Leinster worked hard but couldn’t worm their way over they tryline after some relentless defence by the Bulls.

Leinster’s third try was calling.

Then Willie le Roux got his marching orders after another deliberate knock-down by the Bulls. The visitors needed to be more disciplined if they wanted any chance of lifting the trophy.

The third try came in the 26th minute. Last year their third came in the 22nd minute.

Trailing 0-19 the Bulls now had a steep hill to climb.

Leinster won a fee-kick at the scrum and then a penalty as the Bulls didn’t release in the tackle. Prendergast knocked it over.

Eventually the Bulls were attacking inside Leinster’s 22m area but then Canan Moodie lost it forward. Nothing was working for the men from Pretoria.

They seemed one dimensional, and probably over did the box kicks by Embrose Papier. It became very predictable.

The Bulls won another penalty on the edge of the Leinster 22 but Pollard overcooked his kick and the half-time whistle went. Leinster were absolutely relentless in the first 40.

The Bulls tried to vary their game plan in the outset of the second half, but they seemed hesitant and lacked accuracy.

Their mistakes merely meant Leinster were in their 22 in the 44th minute, driving towards the line once more.

The Bulls were getting their own medicine as the big Leinster forwards were bullying the defence and Prendergast was the man who dove over. He added the extras and now the visitors had a mountain to climb.

Trailing 0-29 the only option for the Bulls was to get their bench on the field.

The commentators were saying the Bulls looked clueless and out of sorts. One could’t disagree with that assumption.

The Bulls’ first opportunity came after 50 minutes, as they managed to work their way into the red zone, but their handling were poor, losing the ball from their own lineout once again.

A deliberat knock-down by Leinster gave them one more chance. The scrum was five metres out. Harold Vorster forced his way over, but he was held up.

When James Lowe got his marching orders for a deliberate knock-down, the Bulls had ten minutes to try and finally get on the scoreboard.

And they did just that. From a maul after a lineout, Moodie was the man to dot down.

The Bulls got a spring in their step after that try and they followed it up with a try by Ruan Nortje, fitting in his last outing the blue and white shirt.
But then referee Andrea Piardi had a relook at one of the passes and the try was cancelled.

To rub salt into the Bulls even more, after relentless phase after phase after phase, Leinster grabbed a fifth try.

It was all over. Leinster retain the title with a sterling performance.

Man of the Match: Sam Predergast defied his critics with a near perfect performance. Compared to the Bulls, he was the grue general guiding Leinster with precision.
