Lions flip the script to deliver Glasgow masterclass

REACTION: Ivan van Rooyen got flashbacks of last year’s 0-42 hammering at halftime as he watched his Lions emphatically turn the tables against log leaders Glasgow Warriors at Ellis Park on Saturday.

The Lions overpowered the United Rugby Championship log leaders Glasgow Warriors 54-12 in a statement victory at Ellis Park, strengthening their hold on a Top Eight spot and boosting their push for a maiden quarterfinal berth.

With this victory, they moved from seventh to fifth in the URC standings on 47 points.

That painful memory fuelled a clinical response, with the Lions producing a dominant display built on defensive steel and high-tempo execution. Determined not to allow Glasgow the same freedom, they choked off opportunities inside the 22 and imposed themselves physically, while their fast start ensured the visitors never found rhythm.

Van Rooyen praised the defensive effort as the cornerstone of the victory, highlighting the work out wide and the team’s ability to control momentum from the outset.

With the job done, attention now shifts quickly to the next challenge as the Lions look to carry this form into a crucial phase of the season.

“I very clearly remember that 42-0 of last year at half-time. It did come up in our team talk this week. We got our pictures right.

“They were just way too good for us. They taught us a lesson in tempo, quick-ball, and pressure. The extra week we had to prepare certainly helped a lot.

“So, I’m really extremely proud of the hard work and the effort the guys put in.”

Taking lessons from that loss last season paid off and it is clear Van Rooyen and his coaching staff did their homework.

“If you’re going to give them entries there, it’s impossible to defend all of their options. So it was a big focus point not to give them penalties. Once they get into your 22, they’re almost impossible to stop.

“My takeaway is just a really proud defensive effort.”

He added that Erich Cronje and Quan Horn did mammoth work in terms of defence out wide and stressed that the defence was the outstanding aspect of the victory.

“They’re the quickest team in terms of the first 20 minutes. If you switch off, you’re probably 20 or 30 points down. So that start was important.

“We wanted to get out of the blocks quickly, and Francke [Horn] and the guys got that right with their decision making and variations on attack.”

Captain Horn insists the Lions are staying grounded, with a strict week-to-week approach as their focus shifts immediately to the next challenge.

He made it clear that while the end goal is in sight, looking too far ahead can be dangerous, with all energy now redirected from their win over Glasgow to the looming test against Connacht.

“We know where we want to be. But if you look too far ahead, you can lose focus. Everything went into Glasgow and next week everything will go into Connacht.”

Van Rooyen is bracing for a very different contest, highlighting Connacht’s strong run of form and their physical, high-tempo style.

While the coaching staff has already begun their analysis, Van Rooyen stressed that recovery comes first before the squad regroups to map out their plan for what promises to be another tough encounter.

“I think it’s six or seven in a row now they’ve won, and they just beat the Stormers. Physically, they are a good team; they play with tempo. It’s a very tough challenge.

“We haven’t looked at next week as a squad. We have reviewed Connacht as coaches, and again, it’s another tough challenge. The bodies must rest now, and then Monday morning, we’ll plan for how we will play against Connacht.”
