Lions get key players back 'at the right time'
NEWS: The Lions are set to bolster their matchday squad for Sunday’s United Rugby Championship Round Two clash against Zebre Parma in Italy.
The Johannesburg side kicked off their campaign with a disappointing 20-33 defeat to Cardiff at Arms Park in Round One last Saturday, and an injection of experience and talent will be needed for a tricky encounter.
On Tuesday, Lions assistant coach Jaque Fourie confirmed that regular captain Francke Horn, flyhalf Chris Smith and utility back Eduan Keyter are all fit and they are putting their hands up for selection this week.
The story continues below…
“It’s still a long season and I think we’ve had a lot of big injuries, ” said Fourie. “Just look at our hookers.
“Francke Horn is fit again, so we are probably looking at getting him in this weekend or next weekend [against Benetton].”
The Lions will also want a commanding presence to dictate play in that No.10 channel, and Smith’s return will be a big boost.
The 31-year-old was a key player in the Lions’ Currie Cup campaign before he suffered a concussion in the side’s 25-27 defeat to Griquas in the Final.
“Chris is also back. He has been very important for us at No.10,” Fourie added.
“You need someone to drive your team to play in the right areas, and he is also looking good for this weekend.
“I think Keyter is also back this weekend and hopefully we can give him a run.
“So, a few guys are coming back at the right time. Hopefully, we can get them on the field.”
