Lions lock in another bruiser

CONTRACT EXTENSION: The Lions continue to keep the core of their squad intact following another player putting pen to paper to stay at Ellis Park.

Lock Etienne Oosthuizen extended his contract with the Lions, although the franchise didn’t confirm the duration of his stay.

Oosthuizen forms part of a significant group of names committing to the Lions after it was announced that SJ Kotze, RF Schoeman, Haashim Pead, Kelly Mpeku and Bronson Mill all opted to remain at Ellis Park.

Commenting on his decision, Oosthuizen believes that something special is brewing in Johannesburg, which is one reason why he is opting to stay in the city of gold.

“Winning the South African Shield is just the start of something bigger at the Lions.

“I don’t want to leave, and I want to extend my career here [Ellis Park].

“I’m very happy in Johannesburg, and my family is settled here as well.

“The support has been great – I started my career here, and it would be a fairytale to finish it at Ellis Park as well.”

Oosthuizen also touched on his role in the team as a mentor and senior figure.

“I’ve grown a lot personality-wise and became a father figure in the team.

“I feel the young guys are looking up to me to guide and lead them, which is my purpose for the team.”

The Lions face Edinburgh on Saturday at Ellis Park as they’re gunning for a maiden play-off spot in the United Rugby Championship.
