Murphy learns his fate after Wessels incident
DISCIPLINARY UPDATE: Connacht flanker Josh Murphy has learnt his fate following his altercation with Bulls prop Jan-Hendrik Wessels in Round Four of the United Rugby Championship.
The disciplinary process related to Josh Murphy’s 20-minute Red Card in the URC Round Four game against the Bulls on Friday, October 17, has resulted in the card being rescinded.
The Player (Josh Murphy, Connacht Rugby No.6) received a 20-minute Red Card in the 18th minute of the game under Law 9.12 – A player must not physically or verbally abuse anyone.
Physical abuse includes, but is not limited to, biting, punching, contact with the eye or eye area, striking with any part of the arm, shoulder, head or knee(s), stamping, trampling, tripping or kicking.
The Panel overseeing the disciplinary process, Simon Thomas (Chair, Wales), Declan Goodwin (Wales), and Leah Thomas (Wales) found that while an act of foul play had occurred, it did not meet the Red Card threshold.
The 20-minute Red Card was thus rescinded.
As a result, the Player is now free to play and available for selection this weekend.
