Fourie on Bok talk: 'You can ask Jacques'

SPOTLIGHT: Stormers star Deon Fourie says the ambition to be a Springbok is still there.

The 35-year-old loose forward has been outstanding this season and he has played an integral role in the Stormers’ qualification for the URC play-offs and the Champions Cup.

His work at the breakdowns has been world-class and he is currently joint top in terms of turnovers won (22).

He has also been an aggressive ball carrier and he does not hold back on defence with his tackles as well.

There has been talk of him possibly getting a call-up for the Springboks, but Fourie says he is just focused on the job at hand.

“I am enjoying the team and I am enjoying the culture. I am enjoying playing rugby in Cape Town,” said Fourie.

“Everything adds to the way I play.

“The ambition [to play for the Springboks] will always be there like any other rugby player.

“If I am closer [to a call-up], I am the wrong guy to ask.

“I’ll send you [Bok coach] Jacques’ [Nienaber’s] number. Maybe you can ask him.”

On his breakdown work, he added: ‘That’s my job and that’s why I play.

“That is what I bring to the team.

“If I can just keep on doing that and add value to the team then I am happy to do it.”

A win against Scarlets in Llanelli on Saturday will give the Stormers home ground advantage in the quarterfinals and Fourie will again be called on to disrupt the opposition’s ball.

However, he knows that teams in the north are good in that area as well.

“I think every side has a player that is good on the ground,” he said.

“You can’t just focus on one guy then you will be off your game.

“We are a complete team at the moment and we are firing at the moment and hopefully we can just pull everything together and just do our jobs.”
