Munster have little luck with Springbok locks

INJURY UPDATE: The Springboks and Munster sustained a fresh injury blow after Jean Kleyn has been ruled out for the rest of the season.

The South African World Cup winner has been sidelined since November 25 after sustaining an eye injury during Munster’s defeat to Leinster in the United Rugby Championship (URC).

However, with Kleyn’s eye injury taking longer than expected, Munster confirmed that the lock has opted to undergo surgery on an ongoing knee issue and will not return to play this season.

The news will certainly be a concern for Springboks and Munster, who recently parted ways with another South Africa lock RG Snyman.

The double World Cup winner will join Leinster in advance of the 2024/25 season.

Although still at Munster until the end of the current season, Snyman is also currently out of action with a chest/shoulder injury he sustained during South Africa’s World Cup Final against the All Blacks.

The Bok is due to return to action in March.

Meanwhile, Munster revealed that Oli Jager, Fineen Wycherley, Alex Nankivell, Niall Scannell, Peter O’Mahony, Joey Carbery and Patrick Campbell are all returning to training this week.

The players’ availability to be determined later in the week ahead of the Champions Cup clash with Toulon on Saturday.

There is a positive update for Eoghan Clarke as he has completed the return-to-play protocols and is available for the weekend.
