Sharks 'counterattack' still alive despite Fassi setback

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: The Sharks will not deviate from their counter-attacking plan, despite the loss of fullback Aphelele Fassi ahead of their crucial United Rugby Championship clash against Ulster this weekend.

The Springbok sustained a rib cartilage injury during last weekend’s 29-7 bonus-point win over the Lions at Ellis Park.

However, according to reports the star will recover in time for the Sharks’ clash against the Stormers in Cape Town on March 4.

Speaking to reporters, Sharks centre Rohan Janse Van Rensburg admitted Fassi’s absence is a big loss to the team as they depend on the fullback’s counterattacking prowess.

“Fassi is an unbelievable player,” Janse Van Rensburg said.

“But I do think there are some players who might make a return – we have to see who it might be.

“We do have some quality players who can step into Fassi’s role.

“So the counterattack will still be alive and ready.

“But regarding Fassi, it is a massive loss and I wish him the best with his recovery. I’m sure he is going to appreciate the rest with that rib.

“And whoever will fill the role is going to fill it to the best of his ability.”

The understrength Ulster

The setback just adds to Neil Powell’s worry, who is already without the services of some of the other Springboks.

Fortunately for the South Africans, Ulster also heads into the fixture understrength with most of their internationals on duty for Ireland in the Six Nations.

The match between the Sharks and Ulster was scheduled to happen on October 22 last year.

However, it was postponed due to illness in the Ulster camp.

“Regardless if they lose a few players, it is always going to be a strong Ulster team that we are going to face,” Janse van Rensburg said

“I think it is important for us to be on it on Saturday.

“We found a good rhythm against the Lions last weekend and there are a couple of fixables we need to fix and make sure we pitch on Saturday.”
