SPOTLIGHT: After 13 years in the Western Province and Stormers structures, hooker Scarra Ntubeni admitted that he has questioned his career decisions.

The 32-year-old will be running out for his 100 Stormers cap on Saturday when his team comes up against the Sharks in a Round Nine clash.

In today’s game, it’s rare to see a player be a one-team man and ahead of the derby, Ntubeni was asked why he has stayed in Cape Town for so long.

“I asked myself that sometimes as well,” Ntubeni told reporters.

“The union has been quite generous to me as well and they looked after me and a few other players from day one.

“I think if I were ever to leave Cape Town, I definitely wouldn’t stay in South Africa.

“I don’t think I had the proper opportunity [to leave]. Maybe I did years ago.

“At the moment I think I am quite happy on and off the field with what the Stormers have done for me.”

It’s that faith in him that has played a significant role in his unwavering motivation to play for the Stormers.

“If I can get opportunities and if I am still needed and still getting selected then I will still be motivated,” said the Bok hooker.

“Sometimes you do go through dips in your career, but sometimes you think about where you wanted to be 10 years ago and now you are here. I think I should also be grateful for that.”

‘Seven operations’

Ntubeni would have reached 100 caps a lot sooner if it were not for several long-term injuries in his career and that will make Saturday’s match an emotional occasion for him.

“It is very special. You just play and play and then you get told you are on 97 and 98 appearances.

“There was a bit of emotion yesterday [Tuesday] thinking of all the tough times – all the time I wanted to give up, having seven operations.

“To be able to reach 100, I think I am very fortunate to keep getting another chance.

“It has taken me a while, but I’m excited.”
