World Cup winner 'Thor' set to leave Ulster

NEWS: Springbok loose forward Duane Vermeulen is among 10 players set to leave Ulster at the end of the season.

The World Cup winner Vermeulen joined the United Rugby Championship team Ulster from the Bulls in 2021.

His move was a surprise to many South Africans, but certainly good news for the Irish side, who was seeking a suitable replacement for Marcell Coetzee.

During his time at Ulster, Vermeulen has quickly become a fan favourite, with his all-action performances becoming a regular highlight at Kingspan Stadium.

He captained Ulster to important wins away against South African opposition earlier this season – helping Ulster reach the play-offs phase of teh URC.

Vermeulen has 63 caps for his country, including a Player of the Match performance in the 2019 World Cup Final against England.

The 36-year-old’s exit forms part of a wider player exodus at the Ulster.

The other departers are Craig Gilroy, Rob Lyttle, Jordi Murphy, Sam Carter, Gareth Milasinovich, Jeffery Toomaga-Allen, Rory Sutherland, Declan Moore and Frank Bradshaw-Ryan.

Commenting on the players departing the Irish team Head Coach Dan McFarland, said: “All of the players moving on from Ulster can be rightly proud of what they have given to our province, both on and off the pitch.

“It seems fitting that we get to recognise their contribution to the club in front of a home crowd at Kingspan Stadium on one of the biggest nights of our season.

“I know the supporters will join me, and the wider playing group and staff at Ulster, in thanking the guys for the part they have played in our ambitions as a squad, and some unforgettable memories for us all when they lined out in the white jersey.”

Ulster is set to face Connacht in the quarterfinal clash of the URC on Friday.
