Sacha's masterclass should silence critics once and for all

OPINION: Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu’s performance against Glasgow Warriors in his 50th for the Stormers should silence those who doubt his abilities once and for all.

The Stormers made a statement of note in their 48-12 dismantling of the Scottish team in their Round 16 United Rugby Championship clash to claim the top spot on the standings.

After their horror performance against Connacht last week, John Dobson’s team had lots to rectify.

They did that and much more as they scored six tries to Glasgow’s two to produce a fantastic show in the Mother City.

Of everything the Stormers got right on Saturday afternoon, the performance of Feinberg-Mngomezulu was perhaps the most important factor, given the criticism the young flyhalf has faced in recent weeks.

Question marks have been all around the 24-year-old recently.

Following the Stormers’ agonising 27-28 defeat against Toulon in the Champions Cup Round of 16, Feinberg-Mngomezulu was the target of heavy criticism for not opting for a dropped goal deep into the game. As the Stormers worked their way towards Toulon’s tryline with a series of pick-and-goes – with Adre Smith eventually going over for a try that was ruled held up – fans bombarded social media with ‘should haves’ and ‘could haves’ as the Springbok playmaker had to bear the brunt of their frustration.

While the Stormers could have opted to exploit the space out wide as they were playing against 13 men at that stage, it mattered not as Feinberg-Mngomezulu was the bullseye for disappointed supporters. The level of abusive, insulting darts that were aimed at him on social media was shocking.

It’s a matter Director of Rugby John Dobson has addressed during press conferences as he naturally defended Feinberg-Mngomezulu, whom he touted as “a future generationally great Springbok”.

But Sacha defended his own name in the best of ways against Glasgow.

Bar that misjudged grubber that led to Glasgow’s first of two tries and a missed penalty kick, Feinberg-Mngomezulu was otherwise faultless as he directed play well, aided by a dominant pack, and brought an extra edge to the Stormers’ attack yet again.

His goal-kicking was also right up there as he converted all six tries and added a couple of penalties, from different, sometimes challenging angles.

He scored a try and added two assists in the most fashionable of ways, with his laser-like grubber that sent Ruhan Nel straight to the tryline the most spectacular of touches.

The story continues below…

His style of play is often blasted as “selfish” or “too individualistic”, and it should be noted that those terms are mostly thrown around when he tries something that doesn’t come off. If it does, more often than not, there’s no such critique. Or not as much, at least.

All in all, Feinberg-Mngomezulu erased any doubts around his form against what has until last weekend been the top team in the competition in an encounter that was crucial in terms of getting into a favourable position to host a quarterfinal.

His opposite No.10, Adam Hastings – custodian of a lethal attacking repertoire himself – almost appeared invisible in comparison to Feinberg-Mngomezulu. Such was the effect of the Stormers 10.

If a reintroduction or reminder of his unmatched abilities as a flyhalf was needed, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu did it almost flawlessly against a team that presents the ultimate all-round challenge.
