Sharks' management shake-up as Plumtree steps down
NEWS: The Sharks have confirmed a series of significant changes to their management ahead of the end of the 2025/26 season.
The headline announcement is that John Plumtree will step down as head coach at the conclusion of the season.
According to an official statement from the Sharks, the decision to vacate the role is by mutual agreement. Plumtree will transition into a mentoring and advisory position within the organisation.
To support Plumtree in achieving results over the remainder of the season, the Sharks have revealed plans to appoint a technical coaching consultant urgently. The consultant will provide input across on-field performance, with a particular focus on refining the team’s game model.
Plumtree said, “My priority has always been what’s best for the Sharks, and that remains my focus.”
The changes come after a disappointing start to the season. Following this, the leadership team conducted a comprehensive review of the Sharks’ rugby structures, engaging multiple stakeholders across all levels of the organisation.
Neil Powell will take on oversight of key operational areas, including the Junior and Academy programmes, player recruitment and retention, logistics, medical and rehabilitation, travel, planning, and budget management.
Sharks CEO Shaun Bryans confirmed that the entire rugby programme will remain under close review for the rest of the season. The top-to-bottom assessment will include every department and function, with external experts involved to inform structural and performance improvements.
Despite the challenges at senior level, the Sharks’ junior system remains a source of pride. The Academy and youth structures have consistently produced world-class talent, including multiple homegrown Junior Springboks and a recent U21 SA Cup title, highlighting the strength of the next generation rising through the ranks.
Bryans added: “Our performances this season have not been good enough, and we owe it to our fans and stakeholders to acknowledge and take full responsibility — no excuses. Accountability sits across the entire organisation, from management and players to myself as CEO.
“As an ownership group and leadership team, we remain ambitious about the future of the Sharks. Over the coming months, no stone will be left unturned as we build a high-performance environment capable of delivering the success our players are capable of and that our fans and partners deserve.”
