Siyaya shines as Sharks add to Munster's misery

MATCH REPORT: The Sharks brought their European tour to a memorable end with a hard-fought 15-3 victory over Munster at Thomond Park on Saturday.

The Durban-based side delivered an impressive defensive display, scoring two tries through Gianni Lombard and Ivan van Zyl to secure a valuable away victory.

Lombard also contributed a conversion and a penalty, while Munster’s only points came through the boot of flyhalf JJ Hanrahan.

It was another significant result for the Sharks, who have now recorded three victories on the road this season, including their Challenge Cup triumph over Lyon in France.

It was also a special occasion for Ethan Hooker, who celebrated his 50th appearance in a Sharks jersey.

For Munster, meanwhile, it was another disappointing evening as they were left with just one victory this season ahead of the international break.

The Sharks were particularly impressive at the set-piece, while their defensive organisation and resilience proved decisive throughout the encounter.

The Sharks headed into the half-time break with a slender 5-3 lead after a fiercely contested opening 40 minutes.

Wet and rainy conditions made for a difficult opening, with both sides forced to prioritise territory and game management.

Munster enjoyed several lineout opportunities inside the Sharks’ five-metre area, but the visitors produced some impressive defensive work to disrupt their driving maul.

The hosts recycled possession and launched a series of powerful carries, but a knock-on eventually brought their attacking momentum to an end.

The Sharks thought they had opened the scoring in the 13th minute when Hanro Jacobs crossed the tryline. However, a double movement by the prop saw the referee rule out the effort, leaving the scoreboard untouched at 0-0.

The visitors eventually found their breakthrough courtesy of Gianni Lombard.

The talented 19-year-old Zekhethelo Siyaya provided the spark, showcasing his attacking instincts and footwork to beat several defenders before sending a kick downfield. The bounce favoured the Sharks, allowing Lombard to gather and cross for the opening try.

Siyaya continued to cause problems for Munster, proving particularly dangerous from the back. The fullback found space inside his own half and launched another attacking kick, but the pace of the ball ultimately denied him a potential scoring opportunity.

Munster came agonisingly close to responding but were held up over the tryline.

The hosts continued to pile on the pressure, but the Sharks’ defensive resilience, particularly at the lineout, repeatedly frustrated their attacking ambitions.

With 30 minutes on the clock, the visitors maintained their narrow 5-0 advantage.

Munster made another threatening entry into the Sharks’ 22, but once again, resolute defence denied them a way through.

And instead, it was the Sharks’ scrum that came to their rescue, allowing the visitors to relieve the pressure and escape their own danger zone.

Munster eventually earned a penalty and, after struggling to make their lineout opportunities count, opted to take the points.

Flyhalf Hanrahan made no mistake, slotting the three-pointer from more than 30 metres out to reduce the deficit to just two points.

That proved to be the final action of the first half, with the Sharks heading into the sheds holding a slender 5-3 lead.

After a tough start to the second-half , the Sharks extended their advantage when Lombard successfully converted a penalty to make it 8-3.

However, the visitors were dealt another setback when Ox Nche was shown a yellow card for an off-the-ball tackle, leaving the Sharks down to 14 men.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, the Durban side caught Munster off guard with a brilliant attacking move.

Captain Nick Hatton produced an outstanding break before offloading to Ivan van Zyl, who finished the move by diving over the tryline. Lombard added the conversion to stretch the Sharks’ advantage to 15-3.

Munster enjoyed plenty of possession during the final quarter as they desperately searched for a way back into the contest.

However, the hosts struggled to find the necessary space and attacking opportunities to break through a stubborn Sharks defence.

The visitors remained disciplined and continued to frustrate Munster, protecting their advantage until the final whistle.

In the end, the Sharks secured a thoroughly deserved 15-3 victory at Thomond Park to bring their European tour to a successful conclusion.

Player of the match: The standout performer was undoubtedly 19-year-old Zekhethelo Siyaya, who delivered an impressive display at fullback. The youngster was a constant threat with ball in hand, using his incredible footwork, pace and attacking instincts to cause Munster all sorts of problems. He also took on the responsibility of executing the tactical kicks during the closing stages, underlining his growing confidence and composure under pressure.
