Springbok fullback out for three months
INJURY NEWS: Sharks head coach JP Pietersen has delivered an update on one of his star Springboks ahead of their United Rugby Championship clash against Munster.
Speaking during the team announcement media briefing, Pietersen confirmed that Aphelele Fassi will be sidelined for up to three months following shoulder surgery.
The 28-year-old sustained the injury during the Sharks’ Round Eight clash against the Lions at Ellis Park and subsequently missed their 12-41 defeat to the Bulls at Loftus Versfeld.
“He [Fassi] went for a shoulder operation,” Pietersen said, adding: “So that probably means he will be out for the three months.”
Fassi’s absence initially opened the door for Jaco Williams, but the utility back is also unavailable due to a hamstring injury. That sees BlitzBok Luan Gillmore set to start at fullback this weekend.
“We’ve got a lot of injuries in the back line,” Pietersen said.
“Jaco was playing last at fullback against the Bulls, obviously struggling with a hammy problem.
“Luan Giliomee, I’ve known him since he arrived here. He’s a talented kid, a great opportunity for him to showcase what he’s got.
“He did well in the BlitzBoks, and obviously he’s in the Junior Springboks mix too. I think it’s a great opportunity for him, come Saturday against Munster, and it’s good that we’re looking at what our future is going to look like too.”
In a boost for the Sharks, Eben Etzebeth is expected to return to action on April 1.
The 34-year-old has been serving a suspension following an eye-gouge incident during the Springboks’ November Test against Wales. A disciplinary panel ruled that Etzebeth made intentional contact with the eye of Welsh flanker Alex Mann.
Etzebeth has remained active with gym work and training during his suspension, but has missed several matches.
