Stormers brace for Test match intensity from Edinburgh
The Stormers know they’ll need to sharpen their finishing when they host “Test match mentality” Edinburgh at DHL Stadium in Cape Town this weekend.
Despite climbing to second on the United Rugby Championship table with a 29-21 win over the Dragons in Round 13, the Cape side were left frustrated by missed opportunities.
The Stormers created plenty of chances but lacked the composure and execution to fully capitalise, crossing for just four tries and conceding three in a match they largely controlled.
Attack coach Dawie Snyman insists there’s no cause for alarm.
“We created a lot of opportunities, similar to the home game against the Bulls [earlier this season],” Snyman said when assessing the team’s conversion rate, when they narrowly beat the Pretoria franchise at DHL Stadium. They created ample chances during the 13-8 win, but only scored two tries.
“It’s just a little bit about options, our skill execution, that type of stuff that we want to focus on.
“I think it’s just maybe wrong options, timing, and, as I said, skill execution that’s just a little bit behind.
“So it’s small stuff, and it’s definitely an area we want to fix and improve on.”
The challenge won’t get any easier. Edinburgh will arrive in Cape Town desperate to respond after a heavy 17-54 defeat to the Lions at Ellis Park.
They are also set to be reinforced by returning Six Nations stars, including Pierre Schoeman and Darcy Graham – both of whom caused problems for the Stormers last season.
“Those are quality players that will obviously bring energy and leadership into their group,” Snyman said.
“I think these areas in the game against the Dragons – against a team like Edinburgh – if you don’t finish those opportunities, if you’re not sharp enough, they can put you under pressure. It’s a team that understands Test match mentality as well.
“So yeah, definitely a tough challenge for us.”
Snyman confirmed that wing Seabelo Senatla will be on the sidelines for a few weeks following a grade two calf strain.
