Stormers coach reveals severity of Nel's injury

INJURY UPDATE: Stormers attack coach Dawie Snyman provided an update regarding the severity of regular captain Ruhan Nel’s calf injury.

Nel withdrew from the Stormers’ matchday squad an hour before their Investec Champions Cup clash against Bristol Bears, with Wandisile Simelane slotting into the No.13 jersey in his absence.

The Stormers made easy work of the Prem outfit following their 49-12 victory and will resume their focus on the United Rugby Championship this weekend for the visiting Scarlets.

Snyman elaborated on the severity of Nel’s injury, but didn’t confirm when he could be available for selection.

“It’s a small calf injury; him not playing was more precautionary, he could’ve pushed [to play against Bristol Bears],” Snyman told Rugby365 in an online media conference on Monday.

“When it comes to calf injuries, if you rip it, it takes a bit longer to heal so we didn’t want to risk it,” he added.

Nel struggled with a similar niggle last season that saw him miss three local derbies against the Lions and Sharks (twice), which the Stormers lost, but according to Snyman it’s not a recurring injury.

“It’s the other side he injured,” Snyman added when asked whether it is the same calf as last time.

Snyman also touched on the overall squad health following the Bristol clash and the possible return of a star player.

“There are no new injuries; Hacjivah [Dayimani] had a concussion, but he should be available this week.

“We are in a good position in terms of player availability.”
