Stormers give Markus Muller a shot
PREVIEW: There will be a spotlight on Durban and Polokwane as the SA Rugby U23 Cup competition enters its second round on Friday.
The Bulls XV and Stormers XXIII are entering the fray for the first time, while the Sharks U23s will be determined to rebound from their opening round 7-24 home loss to the Lions XV.
There are eight players with Stormers caps in the Stormers XXIII starting line-up for the clash against Sharks U23.
Springbok prop Zachary Porthen is joined in the front row by Junior Springbok Olly Reid and hooker Luca Bakkes. Captain Gary Porter is in the second row alongside the young Tom Barnard, while Junior Springbok captain Riley Norton will link up with Keke Morabe and Alutha Wesi in the loose trio.
Imad Khan will partner Dominic Malgas at halfback, with Luke Burger and Josh Boulle in midfield, while fullback JC Mars will have Suleiman Hartzenberg and Mfundo Ndhlovu outside him on the wings.
The replacements bench will feature the talented Markus Muller, along with halfbacks Asad Moos and Kyle Smith as backline cover, with forwards Lukhanyo Vokozela, Hencus van Wyk, Herman Lubbe, Alex Groves and Torren February set to make an impact in the second half.
Stormers XXIII head coach Labeeb Levy said that after a good pre-season match against the Seattle Seawolves, his team is determined to make a positive start to the campaign.
“It was valuable to get some competitive gametime against the Seawolves last week, although we did pay for it a bit with a few injuries.
“Nonetheless, we have managed to put a strong team together, and we face a tough away assignment first-up, so we’ll have to be on our game from the start,” he said.
*Then the action moves to Limpopo, where the Bulls XV will make their first appearance when they host the Lions XV in a Jukskei Derby at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.
The Lions will be keen to build on their opening round victory in their second successive encounter on the road. They led 19-0 at the break in Durban and finished with a bonus-point win – where Keagan Smith scored a first-half hat-trick of tries – to start the competition on a high note.
For the Bulls, this match in Polokwane against their Joburg rivals also gives them the opportunity to broaden their franchise and brand footprint in Limpopo.
Apart from senior players who need game time or those on the fringe of URC selection, the four squads also feature numerous current and former Junior Springboks.
