URC, Round Four - Teams and Predictions

Marcell Coetzee (Bullsrugby FB)

PREVIEW: The United Rugby Championship returns after a week of Champions and Challenge Cup action, and the South African sides are well poised to make it four wins from four.

There are two South African sides doing battle on Friday evening, with the Sharks facing Cardiff at the Arms Park and the Lions battling Sean Everitt’s Edinburgh at Hive Stadium.

The other Friday fixture sees bottom half teams Connacht and Zebre do battle at Dexcom Stadium

On Saturday, the Bulls host Ulster at Loftus Versfeld before the Stormers take on Scarlets at DHL Stadium.

The Lions could go level on log points should they claim the full house and leave the top of the table Edinburgh empty-handed, which would poise well for the Bulls and Stormers to creep up the table should they win their respective matches.

Franco Smith’s Glasgow Warriors lock horns with Benetton in Treviso, followed by the big Irish derby between old foes Leinster and Munster in Dublin.

The weekend’s action concludes in a Welsh derby between the Ospreys and ever-improving Dragons at St Helen’s stadium.

Sharks aiming to topple their “bogey” team.

Cardiff hold the upper hand in the last five clashes between these sides, including a comprehensive 35-0 victory in Durban back in 2022.

The Sharks showed their intent with their team selection, which features 10 Springboks in their matchday squad which shows that they want to get a win on the road.

Sharks Forwards Coach Warren Whiteley said: “They’re a quality team, tactically very smart, and it’s going to be a massive battle.

“There are three things we’ve themed our season on. One was being fast, quicker and more conditioned than we’ve ever been before, and we’ve seen some unbelievable positives in that area.

“Second was about being physical. We know rugby is a physical game, and in each and every area of the game we want to be the most physical.

“And then it’s the relentless factor which speaks to your culture and the values the team holds dear. What’s pleasing for us is that we’re starting to see that, and a lot of it comes from caring for each other and believing in each other.

“It was fantastic to see it last week, and we just want to keep growing together and connecting, getting closer as a group.

“And when we play, we want to see that identity come through, being fast, physical and relentless.”

Lions to build on La Rochelle bravery

The Lions will have their work cut out against a high-flying Edinburgh outfit away from home, but their performances against the All Blacks and more recently against La Rochelle would see them take several positives from those games, albeit that they ended in defeat.

The return of inspirational skipper Francke Horn is a massive boost in their quest to topple the leading side in the tournament.

The Lions had a tough week following the shock passing of lock Hyron Andrews ahead of their Champions Cup clash against La Rochelle.

Lions Assistant Coach Julian Redelinghuys said: “To say it was a rough week is probably an understatement, but the support we received from almost everyone was huge.

“The sorrow everyone felt, and the way it was handled, felt authentic. The way it was handled – locally, abroad, our leadership, coaches and management and players – felt really respectful and that gave us, to a big extent, some closure.”

The Lions have been tapping into Boan Venter’s insights ahead of Friday night.

“He’s got some interesting insights – from knowing the players well, the coaches, the field, the environment and the weather well,”

“He’s got some good opinions, which is helping us in our prep. One comment he made is we’ll maybe be playing the first half and come out after half-time, the weather’s totally different.”

“With the Edinburgh-Stormers game [in Round Two], we saw that the wind was pumping in the first half and in the second half it died down.”

Bulls to put struggling Ulster to sword

The Bulls will have to do battle without livewire Bok scrumhalf Embrose Papier but still boast a formidable line-up to tackle an Ulster side that’s been hot and cold so far.

The Bulls will target a bonus-point win, but Ulster have proven to be a tough customer to beat on any day.

The early kick-off and altitude could favour the hosts, helping them make the most of their home-ground advantage.

Bulls Head Coach Johan Ackermann said: “Ulster are a side with a rich history. They have a great history of international players, including Marcel Coetzee and Ruan Pienaar, and they now have top players like Angus Bell and Juardo Augustus.

“They keep the ball in play for long and are highly skilled with big backs. We know we must be better than we were against Stade Français last weekend.”

Stormers to continue winning streak against Scarlets.

The Stormers will aim to keep their unbeaten record intact against the Llanelli-based side since the inception of the URC.

They have claimed big scalps against the Welsh side before, including a 34-0 victory away from home last season.

John Dobson went all out with his team selection, but the big talking point is scrumhalf Haashim Pead, who earns his first start after two appearances off the bench.

A full five points would be the key focus for the Capetonians before Ulster visits the following week heading into the international break.

Stormers Director of Rugby John Dobson said: “We have four players in Markus Muller, Riley Norton, Olly Reid and Yaqeen Ahmed who are young enough to be playing for the Stormers Bolts, along with the likes of Deon Fourie who is the second most-capped player of all time for this club.

“There are some really dynamic combinations both in the starting line-up and the replacements bench, and they will all be tested against a Scarlets team that has made an impressive start to the season.

“We have enjoyed some great support this month, and everyone is looking forward to an electric atmosphere at DHL Stadium once again.”
