The Bulls’ on-field leadership took massive blows in recent weeks – having lost both captains in Springboks Ruan Nortje and Elrigh Louw to injury.

They also lost skipper Marcell Coetzee to concussion following the Bulls’ dramatic win against the Stormers in Cape Town last weekend.

Youngster Reinhardt Ludwig was appointed as captain for the match against the Sharks.

White suggested it might have been unfair on Ludwig to run the line-out and skipper the side, but in the same breath defended his selection of the 22-year-old as captain.

“Reinhardt Ludwig is an unbelievable leader, he didn’t do anything wrong,” White said.

“Again, if I think about it, him running the line-out and [being] captain.

“Maybe it was unfair on him to have both roles.

“Who knows? Maybe in a couple of weeks or years when he is leading the team and he’s the incumbent captain and everyone goes ‘great masterstroke’, then everything will be positive.

“I remember sitting here saying Ruan Nortje is the captain and then I picked Elrich Louw as the captain and had the same questions.”
