VIDEO: The real reason why Willie was selected at flyhalf

WATCH as Bulls Director of Rugby Jake White explains his reasoning for selecting Willie le Roux at flyhalf against the Stormers in the United Rugby Championship clash in Cape Town.

The Springbok star came off the bench at flyhalf against the Lions two weeks ago and turned the game on its head.

And this weekend his selection at flyhalf against the Stormers paid dividends for the Bulls.

“I’m not sure if I’ll leave him there [at No. 10] because he is making me bloody old,” White jokingly said.

“He [Willie le Roux] wants to throw passes and all that.

“But I’ve also got to trust that he has a feel for what his skill set is.

“The reason I also moved him to flyhalf is that I didn’t have a captain.

“I lost Ruan Nortje and Elrigh Louw, and I thought if he plays fullback he’s just too far, and I needed him a bit closer.

“Did it work? There were times that it worked and times where he wanted the ball and then he didn’t like it and just stood there and let the ball bounce.

“I’m going to ask him, if you want it you must take it, you only have it when you want it [the ball].

“I’m sure if I move him around it’s not going to be easy, sometimes you need to settle in that No. 10 berth.”

White also praised loose forward Cameron Hanekom’s versatility and his feel for the game.

“I think the one thing Cameron [Hanekom] has better than anyone around is feel.

“He pops up in the right places…another thing he has that other loose forwards don’t have is his ability to jump in the line out.”

White felt that his tactics worked against the Capetonians, but that there were moments his side went off script.

“I thought at times it did go off plan, and where it went completely off plan.

“I would think collectively yes [the plan worked], but when it did go off plan we looked like a schoolboy side.

“I’m going to enjoy tonight [Saturday], sometimes you wait a long time for some things to turn.

“I spoke to Andries [Bekker] – they [Stormers] couldn’t beat the Bulls for a long time when he was here.

“And when they beat the Bulls, that cycle changed. So who knows, maybe seven is my lucky number.”
