Wiese reveals reasons for choosing Bulls over Stormers
SPOTLIGHT: Springbok utility forward Cobus Wiese revealed why he opted to remain with the Bulls after speculation that his former team, the Stormers, were after his signature.
According to reports by Rugbypass two weeks ago, Wiese was sought by the Stormers, who looked to bring him back to Cape Town to bolster their forward pack, but the Bulls won the race as he signed on for a further three seasons in Pretoria.
Wiese joined the Bulls from Sale Sharks in 2024 after making a name for himself in the colours of Western Province and the Stormers between 2017 and 2020.
He made his Test debut in 2025 against Italy in Gqeberha and is firmly in Rassie Erasmus’ plans, building towards the 2027 World Cup in Australia after being involved in the first Bok alignment camp of 2026.
Wiese highlighted family reasons and mentioned that a conversation with head coach Johan Ackermann also played a role in his decision.

“It would’ve been an easier decision four years ago with just myself and my fiancé to move around, but now I’ve got a family,” Wiese said.
“I now have a wife, a little girl and had a boy just two months ago… it’s just not yourself you’re thinking about.
“We just thought that Pretoria is the best fit for us at this stage.
“My daughter is in a very good school, and we enjoy the people of Pretoria. It’s a good set-up we’ve got going here now.
“Definitely, coach Johan [Ackermann] whispered one or two things in my ear that I took into consideration, but for myself and my family, Pretoria is the best fit for the next three years.”
