Lions make Cats lick their wounds
Wednesday night’s UCT Steinhoff Internal League action at the Green Mile saw the Lions and Catsville face off against each other for supremacy.
The eagerly-awaited battle between the ever-improving Cats and the majestic Lions was the pick of the matches on Green Mile last night.
The Lions, full of experience, were definitely the favourites and they showed this from the kick-off… and they had their first try on the board after just three minutes of play.
Catsville then stepped up their game, playing the only way they know; direct and bringing their forwards into their gameplan. They did, however, come close to putting their first points on the board, but some great defence from the Lions prevented this.
The Lions then got another try through stand-in captain Xhanti Nesi scoring in the corner. The Cats, however, kept on pressing forward… but kept on making mistakes and were, thereby, unable to make it count.
A high ball which was marked by Lions wing Ronnie Olivier led to another try. Ronnie, taking the quick tap, sent Nesi through a gap in the Cats defence which he exploited brilliantly handing off to centre Devin Dollery to score under the posts.
Big Will Nichol was next on the scoreboard after some hard work from a lineout and the Lions went into the break with a more than handy 22-0 lead.
After the break, Catsville came out all guns blazing and were soon rewarded with their only try of the match, but the last moment of brilliance came from none other than Ronnie Olivier – who outran the Cats defence to score under the posts, capping of a good performance on the night as they won 36-5.
Ikhaya also showed good form on Wednesday night, as they scored four tries in a big win over Marquard. The try-scorers for Ikhaya were Malcolm, Wade, Wes Marie and centre sensation Gerrie Els with two tries. This was a must-win encounter for Ikhaya who kept their title hopes alive with the victory.
In other action, the Panthers had a solid run against Clarendon Knights – beating them 24-5. This was also a must-win fixture for them, which now sees them occupy second spot in the group.
