Plenty action at UCT's Green Mile
UCT’s 2010 Steinhoff Internal League continued to produce upsets, after last night’s (April 28) results at Groote Schuur’s Green Mile.
All the teams, once again, showed their intentions on Wednesday evening – as they have all season long – and there were a few unexpected and some well-deserved results.
The evening started off with the rampant Steinhoff Cobras up against a confident Steinhoff Spanners team. The Spanners, clearly with nothing to lose, threw everything at their opponents – but the Cobras defended well and attacked the Spanners at every opportunity they got.
The Spanners had the first real opportunity to put points on the board, but an error from their flyhalf – who did not find touch – saw the Cobras counter-attack and score in the left-hand corner. The Cobras won 10-0 in the end, but don’t let the scoreline fool you into thinking it was an easy match!
The top-of-the-log clash in Group Four saw the Steinhoff Wild Boys take on the Steinhoff Turtles. Both teams entered the match unbeaten – a clash of the titans for overall group superiority!
The match started off well with both teams attacking and making the other defend at times, but the Wild Boys wanted this match much more than the Turtles outfit. The Wild Boys scored twice in succession and, with their tails up, showed how ruthless they could be scoring another five tries to take the wind out of the Turtles’ sails.
Wildboys star Vaughn Terrey scored a daring long-range try to bring the game to an end, but the Turtles – despite conceding tries to Terrey (two), Stuart Bucanan, Big Pete, Carl Jansen, the one and only Astrin ‘Gangster’ Petersen and Don Pretorius – are still in second place on the log in their group.
In other action, the Steinhoff Magic Lions ran in eight tries to beat Steinhoff College House 42-12, a dominating performance from the Lions who sent out a message to the rest of the Internal League teams with their outstanding performance.
Steinhoff Catsville won their first game in the 2010 campaign, beating Kopano 5-3 in a hard-fought fixture. Catsville – from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology – impressed everybody that came to watch them, despite having a very small front row.
The Steinhoff Panthers also notched up their first win as they put five tries past a helpless Marquard team. Panthers ran out 27-0 victors on the night and are on the verge of securing that second place spot in their group.
The Steinhoff Tornadoes, meanwhile, had a well-controlled match against Shebeen Boys, almost scoring at will. The win, which secured them the top spot within their group, was made possible through tries by Guy Loxton, Mark Winter, Phil ‘The coach’ Quma and Shafiek ‘He’s quick’ Nordien.
Nordien scored two tries to end up as the joint top try-scorer in UCT’s Steinhoff Internal League – along with Wildboys ace Vaughn Terrey.
