Sparkling rugby and a sparkling night

Teams in UCT’s Steinhoff Internal League could not have ask for a better evening to kick-off Round Two. With open skies and a slight breeze, teams took full advantage of the conditions as they won’t be this lucky comes the next few weeks of Internal League action.

The second round has now kicked-off for most of the teams in the Steinhoff Internal League – as we saw ten teams in action on Wednesday.

The opening games saw Shebeen Boys and Kopano fighting it out. The other match was between Wild Boys and Panthers.

The Steinhoff Shebeen Boys made most of the attacking play during their match. The boys in Green & Black crossed the line twice, but were adjudged to have played the ball forward on both occasions. Steinhoff Kopano used the fortune to their advantage as they had a break down the left-hand side and scored five minutes from time to secure the 5-0 win.

The game between Panthers and the Steinhoff Wild Boys was another tight affair.

Both teams had numerous penalties awarded against them, but it was Wild Boys who held their nerve. They put together some fine passages of play and made sure they scored from them. This, however, was the difference between the two teams but nonetheless it was a good showing from the Panthers.

The Cobras and Magic Lions both dominated their opponents with some exciting running rugby – a great advertisement for UCT rugby.

For the Cobras, JP van Huffel was the star of the show – scoring three tries after being put into space by his teammates. The Cobras, playing as a cohesive unit after struggling to find their rhythm in the midfield, were deadly in open play as some of that 2008 magic returned!

The Magic Lions were also extremely potent on the night as they thrashed Ikhaya 38-5. The inclusion of Ronnie ‘The Great’ Oliver and new comer Blaire Taberer brought some experience to their backline. Other standout players for the MOB were Nesi and captain fantastic Rob Nichol.

The last match of night saw the Steinhoff Turtles and the Steinhoff Tornadoes face off. The Nadoes, as one would assume, thrashed the Turtles 51-5.

The Turtles, however, gave the Nadoes a scare when they dominated up front for the first five minutes of the game – but the faster, stronger and fitter team won it at the end with captain Anton van Burg leading from the front.

Results – May 12:
Shebeen Boys 0 Kopano 5
Wild Boys 15 Panthers 0
Cobras 40 Smuts 5
Ikhaya 5 Magic Lions 38
Nadoes 51 Turtles 5
Ubumbo 20 College House 0 (Forfeit)
