UCT players singing in the rain

Teams in the Steinhoff UCT Internal League braved it out on a cold and wet evening on the Green Mile this past Wednesday. Most teams came out to have fun as there was nothing to play for, others came with one goal – TO WIN no matter what stood in there way.

The Steinhoff Cobras started proceedings on the evening when they smashed a lacklustre College House team. Cobras were by far the dominant force as they made College House defend eighty percent of the match.

The Cobras outplayed their opponents in every aspect of the match whether it came to attacks or defence. The Cobras scored seven unanswered tries. Eventually winning the match 54-0. The Cobras are surely in contention of winning this league with this flawless performance.

Steinhoff Smuts Hall had a hard-fought encounter against a wounded Steinhoff Clarendon team who has lost both previous matches.

Smuts scored twice to take the wind out of Claredon’s sails. Clarendon did get a few penalties but the weather didn’t allow them to make use of the points opportunities. Clarendon are now provisionally second in their group standings.

The Steinhoff Tornadoes played an under-performing Marquard team. Tornadoes yet again played a well controlled game as they did last week almost scoring at will with 11 unanswered tries. The Nadoes seemed to be a far better team in the rain than on a dry day. With a performance like surely sending a clear message to all why they are 2009 champs.

The MOB also played to a hard-fought 14-0 win to clinch second spot in their group. Panthers, meanwhile, pipped the Shebeen Boys for that second spot in Group One.

Results on the night:
Claredon 3 Smuts 14
Cobras 54 College House 0
Spanners 0 Magic Lions 14
Shebeen Boys 0 Panthers 7
Tornadoes 64 Marquard 0
